INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS

UP4DREAM - UAV Photogrammetry for Developing Resilience and Educational Activities in Malawi

Co-Investigator in the ISPRS Educational and Capacity Building Initiative

UAV Photogrammetry for Developing Resilience and Educational Activities in Malawi is a cooperative project between the Polytechnic University of Turin (PI) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Malawi (Co-Is), with the support of local Universities (Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mzuzu University) and Agisoft LLC (for the use of their photogrammetry and computer vision software suite). Malawi is a flood-prone landlocked country constantly facing natural and health challenges, which prevent from sustainable socio-economic development of the country. Frequent naturals shocks leave vulnerable communities food-insecure. UNICEF Malawi, in partnership with the Government of Malawi, was the first UNICEF office in the world to establish a segregated air space, which would serve as a sandbox for drone manufacturers, service companies, academia and other entities to test their drones in a real-life humanitarian and development cooperation context. The UP4DREAM project focuses on one of the key priorities of drone project in Malawi (Imagery), and has the ambitious aim of starting a capacity building initiative, in order to become one of the biggest mapping mission in developing countries, focusing on the realization and management of cartography at a big scale and high level of detail (using GIS - Geographic Information Systems) and on the generation of 3D products based on the UAV-acquired data. The principal aim of UP4DREAM is to ensure that local institutions, universities, researchers, and service companies and manufacturers operating in the drone corridor will have the right knowledge and understanding of the photogrammetry and spatial information best practices, in order to perform big-scale aerial data acquisition, processing, share and manage in the most efficient, cost-effective and scientifically-rigorous way.

Image-processing experimentation of shipwrecks datasets in Biscayne National Park

The Complete Geophysical Survey of the Valley of the Kings

Involvement for the realization of multi-sensor and multi scale 3D models of The Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt.

In October 2018, a team of geomatics and geophysics researchers coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Turin worked side by side in the VOK. Topographic measurements in support of geophysical surveys and the achievement of a very large-scale 3D map of the Eastern VOK were the two main objectives of the geomatics campaign. Innovative 3D metric technologies and methods, based on terrestrial laser scanning (both static and mobile) and close-range photogrammetry were employed by the Geomatics team. The geophysical campaign focused on the acquisition of Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and high spatial density Geomagnetic (GM) data. ERT new data around KV62, both inverted in 2D sections and added to the previous ones to perform a new global 3D inversion, confirm the previous results showing both conductive and resistive anomalies that have to be explained. GPR timeslices showed some interesting features in the area in front of the KV2 entrance where GM gradient map also presents localized anomalies. In the area SSW of the KV2 the GM gradient maps evidenced also a large semicircular anomaly which, up to now, has no explanation. The potentialities of using magnetic techniques as a complement to other non-invasive techniques in the search for structures of archeological significance have been explored. The application of modern and innovative methods of 3D metric survey enabled to achieve a complete 3D mapping of what is currently visible in the valley. The integration of 2D/3D mapping data concerning visible elements and hypothetical anomalies, together with the recovering in the same global reference system of underground documentation pertaining to the Theban Mapping Project, prefigure the enhancement of multi-temporal site representation. This strategy enables the fruition development of the already discovered archaeological heritage, using modern criteria of valorization and conservation.

The use of remote sensing data for damage assessment in post-disaster scenarios underlined, in several contexts and situations, the importance of the Geomatics applied techniques for disaster management operations, and nowadays their reliability and suitability in environmental emergencies is globally recognized. In this paper, the authors present their experiences in the framework of the 2016 earthquake in Central Italy and the 2019 Cyclone Idai in Mozambique. Thanks to the use of image-based survey techniques as the main acquisition methods (UAV photogrammetry), damage assessment analysis has been carried out to assess and map the damages that occurred in Pescara del Tronto village, using DEEP (Digital Engine for Emergency Photo-analysis) a deep learning tool for automatic building footprint segmentation and building damage classification, functional to the rapid production of cartography to be used in emergency response operations. The performed analyses have been presented, and the strengths and weaknesses of the employed methods and techniques have been outlined. In conclusion and based on the authors' experience, some operational suggestions and best practices are provided and future research perspectives within the same research topic are introduced.},

abstract = {Underwater cultural sites are, for their intrinsic nature, among the most difficult-to-reach heritage. The difficulty of operating in underwater environments derives not only from the reduced stay time of the operator on the site but also to environmental condition that might affect the survey (such as light condition, turbidity of the water, etc.) reducing its overall quality. The possibility offered nowadays by the adoption of digital photogrammetry techniques allows one to virtually reconstruct the surveyed underwater assets to make it accessible also remotely, via visualization and dissemination platforms (online or offline). In order to improve the study of the documented cultural heritage artefacts and sites, it is crucial to adopt the right photogrammetric principles, such as carefully planning the acquisition geometry, opportunely calibrating the camera before the final acquisition, correctly acquire the images with satisfying the optimal overlap and sidelap, using metric scale bars and or Ground Control Points in order to achieve 3D metric and georeferenced products that are geometrically consistent and coherent with the real object of the survey. This paper is related to the photogrammetric survey of the late-imperial era roman shipwreck, located in Baia dei Camerini, Torre Santa Sabina (BR), Italy, in the framework of the project UnderwaterMuse (Italia-Croatia 2014-2020 Cooperation Programme).
An integrated topographic and photogrammetric (underwater and UAV) survey has been conducted, and in the present research the last advancements in the underwater photogrammetry data acquisition and processing will be addressed in combination with the UAV achievable products. The project aims to enhance and make accessible the vast underwater heritage of the areas involved; this will be done by creating submerged archaeological parks and using virtual reality's narrative and communicative tools and platforms. During the 2020 campaign, different survey activities were carried out using several techniques and methodology to produce the area's multi-scale documentation. First of all, the entire stretch of coast was mapped with UASs (Uncrewed Aerial Systems) flights to reconstruct the coastal landscape in various phases. Furthermore, an underwater photogrammetric survey carried out by expert scuba divers has been achieved in the wreck's aft area (the site analyzed during the 2020 excavation activities). The fruitful synergy between the various actors involved and the support of the territory and the community has allowed the achievement of this campaign's objectives, preliminary to the broader and more articulated intervention foreseen for the following year.},

abstract = {Underwater photogrammetry has become one of the most affordable and adopted methods for the documentation and the 3D reconstruction of submerged archaeological assets. In digital photogrammetry, images are captured to exploit (using computer vision-based procedures) their intrinsic metric contents. To preserve the metric consistency and to obtain reliable 3D metric products, this process must be followed according to photogrammetric principles that are even more important in underwater photogrammetry. The wide diffusion of low-cost and non-metric sensors requires that some attention be given to proper geometric calibration of the employed cameras. Via calibration, it is possible to opportunely describe geometric distortions that are observable on final images due to lens shapes and construction characteristics of the cameras and the optics used in the survey operations.
This research addresses the importance of pre-calibration in underwater cameras, and for this purpose, three calibration datasets are acquired and compared: the first (A) where the camera is pre-calibrated without any addition (flat or dome ports); the second (B) in which the camera is used in combination with a dome port; and the third (C) where the camera setup has been employed in an underwater environment. For both scenarios (dry and wet), self-calibration and pre-calibration procedures are compared. Moreover, is possible to notice how the use of the right camera and lens combinations, specifically designed for underwater survey purposes, are functional to lower the distortion of the images and consequently improve the accuracy of the final 3D products. Different tests have been performed, and preliminary results are presented and discussed in this work-in-progress paper.},

The Puglia Region - Department of Tourism, Economics of Culture and Valorization of the Territory, partner of the UnderwaterMuse project, launching these researches aimed at valorisation, has involved the three regional Universities thanks to an agreement.
The fruitful synergy between the various actors involved and the support of the territory and the community have allowed the achievement of the objectives of this campaign, preliminary to the broader and more articulated intervention foreseen for the next year.
Thanks to the collaboration with the Polytechnic of Turin, the entire stretch of coast was mapped with drone flights, in order to reconstruct the coastal landscape in the various phases, starting from the Bronze Age.
Targeted interventions were carried out on the Roman wreck of the imperial age, beached and abandoned at the ancient shore and now submerged due to the relative rise in sea level, and on the remains of on-board equipment of a ship of the Serenissima, the Galea Magna (1598).
Another important focus was represented by the stratigraphy of cargos resulting from the various shipwreck episodes, accumulated at the foot of the western cliff.},

Another activity, always on the Adriatic Sea, are been conducted in the “Le Cesine” Natural Reserve how led to the identification of a big pier from the Augustan period. On the Ionian Sea, furthermore, in Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area, new evidence has been added to the numerous ones already known, such as some spectacular formations composed uniquely by cemented sherds of Tripolitanian amphorae (2nd cent. AD). This evidence seems to be significant markers of sea-level changes and the evolution of the seascape.},

abstract = {UP4DREAM (UAV Photogrammetry for Developing Resilience and Educational Activities in Malawi) is a cooperative project cofounded by ISPRS between the Polytechnic University of Turin and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Malawi, with the support of two local Universities (Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Mzuzu University), and Agisoft LLC (for the use of their photogrammetry and computer vision software suite). Malawi is a flood-prone landlocked country constantly facing natural and health challenges, which prevent the country's sustainable socio-economic development. Frequent naturals shocks leave vulnerable communities food insecure. Moreover, Malawi suffers from high rates of HIV, as well as it has endemic malaria. The UP4DREAM project focuses on one of the drone project's critical priorities in Malawi (Imagery). It aims to start a capacity-building initiative in line with other mapping missions in developing countries, focusing on the realization and management of large-scale cartography (using GIS - Geographic Information Systems) and on the generation of 3D products based on the UAV-acquired data. The principal aim of UP4DREAM is to ensure that local institutions, universities, researchers, service companies, and manufacturers operating in the humanitarian drone corridor, established by UNICEF in 2017, will have the proper knowledge and understanding of the photogrammetry and spatial information best practices, to perform large-scale aerial data acquisition, processing, share and manage in the most efficient, cost-effective and scientifically rigorous way.},
